Look at art supply and storage options too.Īs for the piano, only a grand or baby grand need to be a focal point. Would a file cabinet not be large enough? There are even file ottomans or storage cubes you can put your own hanging file frame into. I know a lot of sheet music is larger than letter size pages, but file cabiinets are sized to hold those peages (and often legal size pages) in folders. Some of the things I have seen may be more than I would consider for a 10 yr old. I have two musicians - one completes his masters this spring, and I have been thinking of getting him a music stand or a cabinet for his music as a graduation gift. I have seen music cabinets, but they are likly to be custom pieces on Etsy or Custommade sites. Piano benches are quickly outgrown as music storage. I would love having all my books and the piano in one special room! My house is a drafty old craftsman, and I do keep mine on an inside wall, but that's also partially out of necessity since I don't have many options for where it could go. ![]() I would ask the person who tunes your piano what he or she thinks about your individual situation. My technician told me once that 100 years ago when houses weren't well insulated, it was much more important to keep them away from outside walls than it is today. Perhaps a low freestanding bench under the window? I've heard different things about pianos on outside walls. I would also second the recommendation for updating the window treatment. ![]() It could be a corner sectional, or a sofa on one wall plus another reading chair (or two) on the adjacent wall. Then I would take the corner of the room where the piano is now and arrange a seating group there. Make it a special feature visible from the entry way. If that's the case, I would move that beautiful piano to the opposite wall from where it is now, and build in book cases to either side and above it. I'm going to base this on the assumption that the door just beyond the room in the first picture is the front door. ![]() I have a BFA in interior design, have passed the NCIDQ exam. And FYI,I am a professional interior designer. Also, if you have an ottoman from another room you could possibly swap out for the coffee table? just a thought.not having all the "legs" in the room and maybe an upholstered piece. If you want to move the furniture in the future.I think the one comment about moving the chairs closer for conversation is a great idea. I would then remove the flowers from the piano as well. Good job! If you want to hang the picture of your children, do so, but group it with other pictures so they're not "lonely" on the wall. You have to realize, when you post your pictures on this site, new people are going to come in with their opinions. If you have it at 5".AWESOME!!! And none of the lamps in my house match. Furniture needs to be at a minimum 36" from any doorway. If you ever have anyone in your home with a cane, wheelchair or walker, they will not be able to maneuver through a 24" opening. That will barely allow an able bodied person to get through. In speaking of spacing, I'm not sure who told you that 24" is enough in doorways, but they are incorrect. The only issue I have is the back of the sofa.personally I think a table behind it would soften the back. I don't necessarily have a problem with the way you've moved the furniture. An occasional chair in a matching upholstery or even a bold accent color, placed across the other corner of the room, would complete the look. A small sofa would look nice under the single framed mirror, and it would provide excellent seating for your 'audience' whenever you play the piano. The dark frame would look nice above a low bookcase about 48 inches high, provided you could place such on a narrow wall next to a doorway, in the foyer, or in a hallway. I would suggest you move the dark-framed collection of small pictures to a place where the entire set can be viewed more easily. I would suggest you leave the large framed mirror where it is, and you might find two additional matching mirrors you could place on the wall behind the piano to reflect the light. If you have a grand piano, I would suggest you place it across the corner that is to the left of the large window unit. However, a neutral light blue also would look nice because blue is the complementary color of the brown in the floor. I agree with another poster that a silvery grey on the walls would look wonderful with the wood-tone of the floor.
